Raised on the Phillips Academy campus, CAPT Hunter Washburn graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with a BS in history and was commissioned in 2004. He currently works for the Chief of Naval Operations as the Deputy Executive Assistant and is an MIT Seminar XXI Fellow.

At sea, Washburn first served on USS Nitze (DDG 94) as a pre-commissioning crew member, holding roles including communications officer and navigator during her maiden deployment off the Horn of Africa in 2007. He was later operations officer aboard USS Mahan (DDG 72) during a nine-month Ballistic Missile Defense deployment to the eastern Mediterranean in 2012.

Washburn commanded USS Monsoon (PC 4) from 2014 to 2016, earning the Battle E and Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award. Additionally, Washburn was executive officer and commanding officer on USS Gravely (DDG 107) from 2020 to 2023. Gravely was awarded the Arizona Memorial Trophy in 2023.

Ashore, Washburn served at the U.S. Naval Academy as a physical education instructor, facility manager, and crew coach. While stationed in Monterey, Calif., he earned an MBA in financial management from the Naval Postgraduate School and completed JPME Phase I. His multiple roles at the Pentagon included working in OPNAV N801, Program Plan and Development Branch, during POM-18 integration.

Washburn’s personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and Navy Achievement Medal. He resides with his wife, Jenni, and their four children, Ellison, Maren, Hagan, and Linden.
